Zach Cregger, the director of the new Resident Evil movie, shared that he went through some extremely difficult times during production. He revealed that, while filming the adaptation of one of the most beloved horror franchises, he faced significant health issues, which made the creative process even more challenging. The film’s story, which revolves around a man going through hell, seems to have mirrored Cregger’s own experience.
Health Challenges During Filming
Cregger revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that during the first half of filming, he was battling pneumonia. In the second half, he contracted Campylobacter jejuni, an infection that causes diarrhea. He noted that this condition is especially difficult for someone in the middle of a high-budget film production with high expectations.
Support from the Team and the Cast
Despite his debilitating condition, Cregger praised his team, stating that his “wonderful and talented” department heads were essential to overcoming the challenges. He also made a point of mentioning actor Austin Abrams, who plays the lead character Bryan, as an incredibly positive person who helped him face those obstacles.
Harsh Weather Conditions
The difficulties didn't end there. Cregger and his team faced severe weather conditions in the northern Czech Republic, where the film was shot. He mentioned that the intense cold was an additional challenge, saying, "We froze our butts off" while trying to film in freezing temperatures.
Cregger's Past Experiences
This isn't the first challenge Cregger has faced on a film set. During the production of his previous film, *Weapons*, he also dealt with adverse conditions, where the intense heat required him to receive intravenous fluids and direct some scenes remotely.
Expectations for the Launch
"Resident Evil" is set to premiere on September 18, and expectations are high. The film is expected to have a record-breaking opening weekend, especially given the franchise's dedicated fan base. Audiences are eager to see how Cregger's vision will translate to the big screen.
The Protagonist and the Story
The film stars Austin Abrams as Bryan, a medical courier who finds himself caught up in a world of pain and chaos. Described as a “dumbass” in the midst of a desperate situation, the character promises to bring a touch of humor and humanity to a dark story.
